Colour Of Summer 2

I have enjoying painting figures on the beach so much that I plan to do many more,  I think I have captured the colours of summer in this one although it is not yet finished - need to work it a little more. It is oil on gesso primed wood panel, 40 x 40cm.

The colour Of Summer

Painting the colours of summer transports me to the beach which I love!  Using just a basic palette of colours I have tried to capture the drama of light and shadow on the beach.

Figure study

I thought I would paint a sunny figurative beach scene to mark the end of winter - I am really looking forward to warmer weather and a brighter sun.

Acrylic Painting Workshop at My Studio

Would you like to learn how to paint with Acrylics? I am hosting a weekend workshop in my studio with self taught professional artist Mark Waller as the teacher - his specialty is beach, sea, water - he will be travelling from Lennox Heads to Adelaide in September and his workshops are informative and fun - you will need to email him if you would like to attend. It is a good opportunity to pick up some tips on using Atelier Interactive Acrylic Paints. The flyer for the workshop

The Process of Painting a Family Portrait

I was commissioned by a client in Europe to paint his family as a very special gift to his wife to celebrate the birth of their 4th child.  The brief was to do a 2m x 1.2m painting and to include hobbies, interests, bright colour and also the unborn child.  The client sent me 7 folders of photos which I spent many hours pouring over to get a sense of the family and form a composition.  I am very please with the result and the painting will become a wonderful heirloom for the family.  Here are some photographs of the painting at 3 stages.

Stage 2, Stage 1 is working out the composition

Stage 3, Casting the characters & directing their positions at the table

Stage 4, Composing the colours to use as I go along

Stage 5, after many weeks of work I have finally finished and am very happy with the painting

Almost March Already!

Where has the summer gone?  It has been an incredibly hot summer here with very little rain and quite a few bush fires - some of which were not far away from our property, so we have been on high alert at times.  I have had a break from painting due to christmas holidays and an injury in my left arm.  I have bursitis in my shoulder and tennis elbow both in my left arm and I am totally left handed and of course it is very painful to paint and  have to rest it.  Needless to say it has been very frustrating and I have tried all kinds of treatment but I think rest and gentle exercises are the best options.  It has improved a little and I can now paint about 30 minutes a day.  I have been working on a large 2m long painting which was commissioned from a client in  Europe - a family portrait and If I get permission I will post a series of photos of the process.
